Recognition & Cosmopolitanism
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
Recognition concerns the social relations through which individuals and political communities become intelligible to one another. Recognition can support agency and membership; its denial or distortion can structure conflict and limit who is treated as a political actor.
My research connects recognition theory and critical theory to cosmopolitan community beyond the state. Drawing on reconstructive critique and Axel Honneth’s work, it examines how recognition develops across personal, private and public spheres and what this reveals about conditions for more just relations.
Cosmopolitanism is treated as an unfinished social and political possibility, not a settled global order. It asks how institutions and communities might respond to exclusion while preserving room for difference and contestation.
